This blog post is part of a series highlighting Advisor Legacy team members. As Vice President of our Acquisition and Legacy Planning services, Todd Doherty melds his background as a business owner with his experience in the financial services industry to help advisors manage their equity and navigate M&A transactions

Todd began his career in retail, first as a business owner, then as a franchise consultant developing programs to help other small business owners in starting, managing, and growing their business. He soon transitioned to the financial services industry where he worked both on the broker dealer side as well as internally as an operations professional for advisory practices.

In his role as COO for a financial practice, Todd developed a strong understanding of what makes practices valuable and how to buy and sell practices in a way that lead to good outcomes for all parties. It was this experience that led him to develop a working relationship with the team that would become Advisor Legacy. From the beginning, Todd and the Advisor Legacy team developed the organization to primarily serve the interests of the selling advisor, who is often underrepresented in M&A transactions. Todd stresses that the commitment to serving the seller first is one of the key drivers of Advisor Legacy and impacts how we do business. Todd also shares that his partnership with Advisor Legacy, which began in 2013, has been synergistic from the start. As he puts it, “What they brought to the table and what I brought to the table allowed us to offer something even better.

Since then, Todd has been the driving force behind the development of our award-winning valuations, our deal support services, and in developing our relationships with broker dealers, custodians, and consultants across the industry. He continually looks for opportunities to elevate and expand our offerings to advisors, and recently helped to develop the MaxVal Predictor Tool which helps advisors determine the best time to sell. Todd has also developed powerful programming to educate advisors on how to not only manage their equity, but also how to maximize monetization of practice equity.

When not leading legacy services, Todd enjoys hiking, biking, and rafting in the Mountain resort town in Washington that he calls home. Much of his time outdoors is spent with his wife and two daughters, ages 11 and 16. A fun fact is that Todd was a competitive cyclist for 17 years, and although he no longer races, he does enjoy both street and mountain biking and watching races when he can.
